Woodcarver's Shop personal project

June 15th 2021 (original draft for post)

What started out as a simple illustration at first turned into this story/ world I wanted to explore.

Main story: a young famous woodcarver (early 30s) is forced to take on an apprentice, making him feel inspired to house/help other apprentices who love woodworking.

Had started designing the interior of the Workshop, but scraped it to see what shots would be storybeat. Here's the first one. I wanted the new apprentice to be amazed at this Carver's accomplishments.

Btw: she's a big fan of his.

Wanted it to be set in a time in the early 1900s but have a whimsical feel to it. So his workshop would be in an industrial building that he bought with his prize and contractual money that he modifies to suit his needs.

An idea for him since he loves nature and tries to stay close to it via woodcarving he would maybe keep other nature elements close to him and add to the whimsy as well. So by using snail goop as his glue instead of regular wood glue and having a moth/firefly hybrid insect as his main source of lighting.

The more I thought about it the more it made sense to use an Art Nouveau style for his woodcarving and decor for the time period. Decided to use a moth design motif for the various props he'd have in his workshop.

(Sept 2022) Story wise this project has taken a turn. Might update on it later
